EBM in EBMfer stands for Easy Bowel Movement, name given due to good GI tolerability of EBMfer in clinical studies.
We have the latest Canadian, Independent, unsponsored first of its kind clinical trial where EBMfer has been compared head-to-head with FeraMAX and Euro-Fer. EBMfer (ferrous Ascorbate) has been found statistically significantly better (bar graph in the middle) in improving Hemoglobin and Ferritin while treating iron deficiency anemia in adults. Published in peer reviewed journal "Canadian Primary Care Today" - access full publication at https://canadianprimarycaretoday.com/issue/view/vol-3-2/pdf_en

Unlike giving iron and vitamin C as two separate substances, Ferrous Ascorbate in EBMfer delivers both of these in a SINGLE MOLECULE that makes a substantial difference as you see in the results.
We can derive following conclusions from this study:
- EBMfer taken with plain water is superior in improving hemoglobin and ferritin as compared to FeraMAX and Euro-Fer taken with Vitamin C or a source of vitamin C like orange juice/ lemon water.
- The 150mg elemental iron (FeraMAX) doesn't produce better results than 100mg elemental iron (EBMfer).
- EBMfer works. When a patient is put on EBMfer, results will be evident in blood test at 12 weeks.
- Although FeraMAX had compliance rate of 89% that is superior to 79% of EBMfer, it did not translate into any benefit in results.

Key highlights:
- Boosts energy, hemoglobin and Red Blood Cells (RBCs).
- High potency 100 mg elemental iron per capsule with high absorption rate, little left unabsorbed to cause any stomach related side effects, hence easy on stomach.
- Ferrous Ascorbate provides iron and vitamin C in single molecule so no need to take vitamin C or orange juice separately to increase iron absorption.
- Take once-a-day with food, hence, convenient and low per day cost of therapy.
- Approved by Health Canada - Safe, effective and high quality iron pills for everyone including pregnant women.
- NOT made from the BLOOD of cow and pig like heme iron supplements. EBMfer is Vegan with high absorption.
- Free from animal cruelty, dairy, lactose, gluten, gelatin, sugar, dye and common allergens.
FAQs:
-
How is constipation or other stomach related side effects with EBMfer?
At recommended dose of 1 capsule a day, EBMfer is well tolerated and generally gentle on stomach. However, just like any other iron supplement, EBMfer may cause some stomach related side effects like constipation or abdominal pain, although with EBMfer the side effects are transient and mild and should disappear when you continue taking the medication. Taking EBMfer with food or alternate day further reduces the incidence of stomach related side effects. Another option is to use EBMfer PLUS capsules that contains a lower dose, 45mg elemental iron along with B12 1000 mcg, D3 1000 IU, Folate 1 mg, and Zn 10 mg.
-
Is EBMfer covered by private insurance plans?
Some insurance plan do pay for EBMfer that patient's pharmacy can check based on an Rx. In case if not covered, employees can expense it in HSA (Health Spending Account).
-
How does EBMfer compare with heme- iron?
We are not aware of any study directly comparing ferrous ascorbate (EBMfer) with heme-iron. However, some apparent differences could be:
1. Heme-iron is made from the blood of cows or pigs while EBMfer is ferrous ascorbate and is vegan. To make heme iron, blood of the source animal is collected and centrifuged to separate RBCs from plasma. RBCs are then used to extract iron and make heme iron tablets.
2. Heme-iron usually contain much smaller amount of elemental iron (usually 11-12mg elemental iron) while EBMfer contains 100mg elemental iron from ferrous ascorbate.
3. Heme-iron is usually recommended up to 3 times daily that may pose patient compliance challenge. When taken 3 times a day, heme-iron could be much more expensive option. EBMfer is taken one daily.
4. EBMfer does not contain animal product, dairy, sugar, gelatin, lactose, gluten, or common allergens and hence, suitable for people with restricted diets, vegetarians and vegans too.
-
Can EBMfer capsule be opened if I cannot swallow?
Yes, you can and mix it with a small quantity of juice and drink with straw to avoid staining of the teeth.
-
How can we avoid staining of the teeth with iron supplements?
The staining of the teeth from iron supplements is common and may be avoided or minimized by brushing the teeth. Existing iron stains can usually be removed by brushing with baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) or hydrogen peroxide 3%.
-
What are the contraindications of iron?
Conditions:
· Iron Metabolism Disorder causing Increased Iron Storage
· Increased Bodily Iron from High Red Blood Cell Destruction
· Hemolytic Anemia
· Ulcer from Stomach Acid
· Burning Stomach
· Ulcerated Colon
· Several Blood Transfusions
· Diverticular Disease
· Problems with Food Passing Through the Esophagus
Allergies:
· Iron containing supplements
· Any component of the iron supplements (other/ non-medicinal ingredients)
-
What are the interactions with iron?
As EBMfer is recommended once a day and few hours before or after taking other medications, it should be possible to safely adjust the dosage schedules and thereby minimizing possible interaction in the GI tract.
Ascorbic acid, or vitamin C, strongly enhances iron absorption. It releases non-heme iron bound to inhibitors. The effect is strongest when vitamin C containing foods are eaten with foods containing high levels of inhibitors. For instance, a glass of orange juice can help minimize the effect of phytate in breakfast cereal and calcium in milk.
Inhibitors of iron absorption
Enhancers of iron absorption
Phytates: Whole grains e.g. rice, cereal bran, nuts, soybeans, nuts, seeds
Vitamin C/ ascorbic acid: fruits and veggies e.g. peppers, broccoli, grapefruit, supplements
Polyphenols e.g. tannins: lentils/ legumes, green leafy veggies like spinach, tea, coffee, cocoa, eggplant
Animal products: meat, seafood, fish, poultry
Calcium: dairy products e.g. milk, yogourt, cheese, calcium containing antacids
Citric acid
Oxalates: Chocolate, beet, rhubarb
Phosvitin: egg yolk
Medications: Tetracyclines, antacids, cholesterol lowering drugs called bile acid sequestrants e.g. cholestyramine and cholestipol, anti-ulcer medications like proton pump inhibitors e.g. omeprazole, lansoprazole, rabeprazole and H2 receptor blockers e.g. ranitidine and famotidine, thyroid medicine called levothyroxine, quinolone antibiotics like ciprofloxacin, Levodopa and methyldopa, Mycophenolate Mofetil (CellCept), Penicillamine, Bisphosphonates (Alendronate, etidronate)
